Title: Etiquette-friends
Post by oCeAnIc on Mar 22nd, 2008 at 11:50am
Ok a question..

I have found that certain people in our lives have the habit of just "popping" in unannounced. when this happens I just put on the kettle and we have a chat..

Some of these chats however can last for up to 3 hours..thats a big chunk out of a day..

I have one older man, 68, who had the habit of popping in on the off chance he catches me home and then sit for up to 4 hours. This got to the point of being intolerable , not to mention boring.

He would actually be offended if in the time he was there you took a phone call and diverted your sole attention away from him.

I tried ways to let him know that there are so many hours in the day etc..that I had to get on with different things that needed to be done. It went over him like water off a duck and he continued to do it.

I started to resort to old tricks like "aahhh Im just on my way out".. "I have a virus..you dont want to catch it"..that one always worked a treat..

He was actually offended when in the end I told him directly and asked that he calls before he turned up for one of his visits.

He often has a go at me still  telling me Im rude..

I dont feel Im being unreasonable..

So is it...?

No that isn't unreasonable. Maybe he was after something.... Most people catch on eventually and feel silly if they have been imposing themselves. You must be way too accomodating. You shouldn't feel bad if you have to ignore them. Your misplaced feelings regarding ettiquette were probably preventing you from communicating your feelings to him.

Either I have gone nuts (which is possible) or gremlins are still deleting posts.  You made a post here that I read Oceans.  Now the forum gremlin has removed it.  What's happening dude?
