Title: Honey is an antibiotic Post by freediver on Jul 24th, 2007 at 11:46am
I've heard that even regular honey is a good antibiotic
US approves Manuka honey wound dressings http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/US-approves-Manuka-honey-wound-dressings/2007/07/23/1185043026786.html Waikato-based Comvita Ltd says its patented "advanced wound care dressing" has become the first using manuka honey for wounds and burns to receive marketing clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some biologically active honey gathered from manuka contains the compound methylglyoxal, which helps it to battle bacteria causing stomach ulcers, and to promote wound healing. Wound-care products using the honey have become increasingly valuable as they have also proven effective against some antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. |

The variety in question does have additional properties which make it valuable. However, any old honey is a useful antibiotic, as far as I know. Are there any micro-organisms that can live on honey? Does honey ever go off?

I've increased my honey intake and I change from one type to another looking for the sweet spot of honeys to my liking. Raw egg a day, no alcohol etc, Fruit, garlic, apricot and more.
Honeys are a great food and healing product. Would reccommend it to anyone and push the point of importance to protect our Bee industry. |

I put honey in with my oatmeal. Manuka honey was purchased in place of regular honey because it was making me feel better.

The antibiotic aspect has been suspected. FDA marketing clearance isn't a sign it works, just that there is permission to market it.

Would the FDA permit marketing of medical treatments that have no value?

Its more about not killing anyone more than not working https://www.cnet.com/health/fda-approved-vs-fda-cleared-whats-the-difference/ |

Bit of circular logic in that article - a "cleared" product means it is equivalent to another product that is either "cleared" or "approved". Approval requires demonstration of actual benefits.

Thats for commerical devices. But for something like manuka its the FDA saying we know this won't kill anyone but we cant approve it for clinical use like we would a drug

It's a wound dressing. I expect they would pay a bit more attention.

Its advertised as a wound dressing which means its a band aid. Is it better than a band aid? who knows, but as long as its sterile its not worse

My understanding is that the medicinal effort on Manuka is about isolating the key compunds rather than just using the honey

Dipping skin cancer patients into warm 'Emu Oil' baths is probably of no beneficial aspect also, but because it doesn't hurt or kill - it's approved as a 'Medical' aspect?
I don't get it? |
