A 15-year-old girl injured when the overloaded four-wheel drive she was a passenger in hit a road train in outback Northern Territory remains in a critical condition in Royal Darwin Hospital.

The Toyota Troop Carrier, carrying 17 adults and children, collided with the back end of the road train on a dirt road about 22km west of Daly River about 6pm (CST) Saturday.

One male passenger died at the scene, while 15 others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police earlier said the driver of the 4WD was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt.

It appeared the road train was travelling on a dirt road when it slowed to cross a cattle grid, raising a cloud of dust behind it.

She said the matter was being investigated by northern traffic operations crash investigators and it was not known whether or not alcohol was a factor.
