Cane toad cannibalism may be the answer

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Cane-toad-cannibalism-may-be-the-answer/2007/06/04/1180809420366.html

Encouraging the cannibalistic tendencies of cane toads could be the key to controlling their massive population explosion, new research suggests.

The cane toad diet consists mainly of insects but a University of Sydney researcher has discovered they have an appetite for their own young, consuming up to 12 other cane toads in a lifetime.

Adult cane toads wave one of the three toes on their hind legs, luring in the young who are fooled into thinking it is an insect. The unsuspecting youngster is then eaten.

"We will modify ponds to encourage cane toads to breed in the same place then the toads can control themselves," he said.

Unlike other native wildlife, the cane toad has no reaction to the poison held in its gland, enough to kill a small dog.

These canetoads are now entering SA...

As for Cannibalism being the answer..I doubt it. At 12 canetoads being consumed as a total of 12 in a lifetime..would be self defaeting..have you seen the rate at which these ugly little sh!tes breed?

The rate of breeding is very prolific..walked over them every moring on the way to school in qld.

You know that some environmentalists want you to sequester them in plastic bags and put them in your freezer so they can gently go to sleep?

Make sure you lick their backs first!  :D

I know, but

1. I dont want cane toads in my freezer.

2. For what they do to our native animals, they deserve a good crushing.

I am comfortable with the concept of a headlamp and a cheap #4 iron.

Maybe a #5 wood ?

Too much risk of the venom splattering up to your mouth. It's happened before.

It's never happened to me. I suspect it may be a bigger problem further north where the cane toads are fatter.

Cripes - that is just about time for a baseball bat ! Don't want to risk a club breaking.

I see the reasoning for the "thimp thump" method.

Are they the ugliest animals alive ?
